Here are five things you need to know for Monday.

  1. The Flint City Council is holding a special meeting at City Hall tonight at 5:30 p.m. to meet a deadline for the city’s budget. Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said the budget is balanced and includes more funding for public safety, infrastructure repairs and recreational activities. However, Councilwoman Tonya Burns has raised concerns over how money in the general fund is being spent. The city charter requires the budget to be approved today. Otherwise, the city could face employee layoffs and pauses in services for residents. The Flint City Council has not passed the budget on time for the past three years. 2. Bay City commissioners will review the city budget and how residents’ money will be spent at tonight’s meeting. The meeting includes a budget presentation by the city manager with a breakdown of accounts, claims and payroll that need approval. Also on the agenda is a proclamation for Pride Month. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Commission Chambers of City Hall.
  3. Starting today, residents have a new option to opt out of being listed on Michigan’s voter rolls. Eligible residents who complete certain transactions at a Secretary of State Office and are automatically registered or pre-registered to vote, will get a letter in the mail from the Michigan Department of State. The letter will feature a pre-paid opt-out form. If you don’t want to be on Michigan’s voter roll, you can send the form back. You’ll be removed from the voter file and your local clerk will be notified.
  4. Contract talks begin today for University of Michigan-Flint lecturers. Members of the Lecturers’ Employee Organization are seeking annual raises for the final two years of the union’s 2024-2028 contract. Following a meeting this morning, union members will hold a rally at McKinnon Plaza on the University of Michigan-Flint campus around 11:45 a.m.
  5. Downtown Midland’s Pedestrian Plaza opens today and runs through Sept. 30. The plaza closes Main Street between Ashman and Rodd streets and parts of McDonald Street for outdoor dining, games and community events. The Commons live music series starts Friday, bringing free concerts Friday and Saturday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. The plaza sits inside the city’s refreshment area so visitors can enjoy to go drinks.
