SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) — The Saginaw VA has launched a new electronic health record system as part of a nationwide effort to modernize care and better connect facilities.

The system is the first modernization in VA health care in decades, Anthony Colon with the Saginaw VA said.

Saginaw was selected to be one of the first facilities to implement the most current version of the electronic health record. The system is designed to bring patient information together, making care more seamless for veterans who receive services at multiple locations.

“Once all the VAs are online, it will be a much easier process for a traveling veteran to get the same care,” Colon said. “The current, previous system required you to go into a bunch of different places to find records of the different visits you made. Now it’s all going to be one record.”

Leaders say the system will also improve how care is delivered day to day.

“Because of the modernization, it will allow our providers to spend more time with our veterans and less time doing computer work,” Colon said.

The rollout is expected to continue nationwide in the coming years, with all VA facilities set to transition by 2031.
